The past few days I have been busy and distracted, however, I am happy to report that I have remained on track.. yay! So far so good.. it hasn't been too much of an effort and I have escaped unscathed from the 'Attack' phase.
DAY 5 was the last day of my attack phase. I debated as to whether I should continue for a full week, but decided to go for 5 as I feared becoming frustrated with too much protein which could result in me giving up and feeling like a failure. My menu for that day was relatively similar to the previous 4 days - Oat bran Galette made with cottage cheese (out of fruche still).. My home made custard recipe (sooo good).. Then knowing I was heading into the 'Cruise' phase the next day, I prepared a roast beef with vegetables so I could have it for lunch at work the following day.. Oooh I couldn't wait.
DAY 6 was the start of the 'Cruise' phase. PV (protein & veg day) I ate my home made Dukan style custard with oat bran for brekky (awesome custard style porridge). Lunch was of course my long awaited roast beef with veg (asparagus, roasted capsicum & zuchinni, carrots, beans, broccolini & baby beans).. yes, I indulged on the vegies lol. Dinner I made some beef kebabs, however I was disapointed with the quality of the beef as it was tough and chewy.. dammit. I enjoyed 6 bbq'd mushrooms & 2 grilled tomatoes. Oh.. and I will be honest.. I may have knicked a few slices of bbq'd potatoe slices off hubby's plate.. yes, potatoes are my weakness :( I doubt it'll do any damage so long as I don't make a habit of doing it each time lol.. I certainly am not about to beat myself up over it! For dessert (I am a glutton for punishment) I attempted the meringues again with stevia sugar powder.. FAILURE.. hmmm.. it wasn't until I googled the words 'stevia & meringue' and discovered that my efforts were going to always lead to failure as Stevia just won't cut it when making meringue.. bugger :( I may try Splenda.. I google that and people have been able to make that work! There is hope yet :)
DAY 7 PO (protein only day)
BREKKY:
Home made custard porridge (made with my own custard recipe & 2 tbs of oatbran)
Coffee x2
LUNCH:
Skipped lunch - well, I picked at about 5 pieces of kebab beef from last nights dinner.. I guess that counts!
DINNER:
The best one yet! So I worked out I can (well, I think I'm allowed lol) make a thai green curry using Nestle Carnation Light And Creamy Coconut Flavoured Milk - it has the same nutritional value in 100 mls as 250mls of skim milk basically, so that works out a'ok.
I made up a Thai Green Curry Chicken with Shallots (I think some onion is ok on PO days) and prawns. Turned out fantastic.
DESSERT:
YES. YES. YES!! I nailed it. Choc Meringue Kisses.. oh so sweet.. crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle.. Pure bliss Dukaners.. PURE BLISS. Find the recipe here - http://www.fitnessandfreebies.com/lc/recipe01.html Instead of Splenda I used what is called Hermesetas Granula Sweetner.. it has a particular fibre in it that I think helps hold the form of the meringue better. Found in Woolies in the sugar section.
Ok I will confess.. I ate the lot.. infact I ate half the mixture as a mousse before it went in to the oven.. then after the other half were cooked I topped them with half a tub of Yoplait Forme Cheesecake flavoured yogurt and devoured them a delirious frenzy... nummy num nums. I know, very piggish of me.. however, show me some pity.. there are certain 'times' (I'm sure every woman knows what I mean) where us women NEED a little moment of sweet binging.. it can be a matter of life and death.. it is safer for everyone living under the same roof for us to over indulge during those 'trying & emotional' times. And indulge I did.. from a velvety choc mousse.. to crispy soft centered meringues.. *sigh*
Geeze I hope the artificial sweetner doesn't have a laxative effect lol... wheeeeew!
So overall, the first week has been fantastic. I'm finding it quite easy and not in any way difficult to stick to. I think now that I can alternate with protein & protein and veg days it feels a lot less daunting than some of the other high protein 'diets' (disasters I'd prefer to say) on the market out there. No, I'm excited to say that I feel this is do-able.. especially knowing that at the end of the road you will be back to eat bread, pasta, potatoes (yes!) and desserts (already doing that.. us women always find a way). The only thing I haven't been following to the book is the exercise - 20 mins a day thing. Twice a week I'm on my feet for 8 hours - and I mean running around like a mad chook. I'm also actively snowboarding twice a week too.. so I don't think I'm missing out on exercise.. maybe substituting somewhat ;o) Tomorrow I plan to start introducing some strength training and get back on my elliptical to work on my cardio fitness. I plan to go back to muay thai kick boxing training at the end of winter (late sept or early oct).. I miss it so much :(
Another great finding at the end of my first week is the condition of my skin.. it's glowing and actually acne free.. don't get me wrong.. I don't suffer from chronic acne or anything, but after my high carb sugary 3 week binge my skin had become a little reminisant of an Arnotts Pizza Shape :o/
Doing the Dukan
Diary of a Dukan Dieter. 17kgs to lose. The Dukan Diet calculator indicates that I should lose the 17kgs by the 24th of November 2010. I chose to blog the progress of my attempt at the Dukan Diet for not only my own benefit, but also to give other curious people an insight in to the reality of this diet. Will it work? Time will tell.. hang around and drop by to keep tabs on my progress. Looking forward to sharing the experience with you.

Day 4 - 27th July 2010
Didn't get around to posting a blog yesterday.. so I'm updating yesterday today ;O)

BREKKY:
Oat bran galette made with cottage cheese (out of fruche.. bugger) They still tasted real good though :)
2 coffees
LUNCH:
Forme Sticky Date flavoured yogurt
Turkey slices
Dairy Farmers Fat Free custard
1 LG Skim Latte
DINNER:
Beef Patties with Hoisin Sauce mixed with some sugar free tomato paste (it was ok.. bit over the top tangy)
Staff meeting & roast dinner - I enjoyed the roast beef.. everyone raised their eyes when I bypassed the veg.. how I hate having to explain myself lol
DESSERT:
pathetic attempt at making crunchy meringues substituting sugar with artificial sugar.. hmmmm should have reffered to a recipe because they were like sponges lol.

Day 3 - 26th July 2010
So I lasted yet another day.. done fine.. feeling ok.. not tired.. may have had some late evening dull headaches last night.. oh and some acidic runny time at the dunny (not nice to report.. and I know TMI.. but I want to give an honest reflection here!).. no running to the dunny today.. yet!
Ok, so I forgot to post my measurements the other day.. so I will do it in this blog :) Oh.. I may have got a little excited and had a *sneaky* weigh-in this morning just out of curiosity.. 1kg down.. wow.. I know that this is probably water loss.. Dr Dukan even states that in the book.. but that's cool because it is still motivating on a pyschological level lol. Another positive is that I'm feeling less foggy in the head and my sugar cravings are not as intense.. and that is something coming from a chick who works in a bakery surrounded by loads of fantastic tasting yummies. I worked today and managed to remain in check and in control.. it wasn't a struggle at all. Feeling proud of myself :)
MEASUREMENTS: starting at 24th July 2010
Waist 90cm
Hips 108cm
Thigh 61cm
Upper Arm 31cm
BREKKY:
Oat bran galette topped with fruche
1x coffee
SNACK:
1 x LG Skim Latte
LUNCH:
Chicken Meatballs with Hoisin Sauce (not sure if that sauce is allowed.. but I wanted it & I had it!)
1 x LG Skim Latte
SNACK:
Custard made with 1/2 cup skim milk, 1 tub of vanilla Fruche, 2 egg yolks and a 1/2 tsp of cornflour
DINNER:
Beef patties made with Hollandaise sauce

Day 2 - 25th July 2010
Slept beautifully last night.. think that the lack of sugar, which I had been rolling in the past few weeks, actually settled my body nicely for a restful slumber. All went well today.. so far (Dinner is yet to be preped). I did however have a melt down after been out today and returned home to peel the shell of some hard boiled eggs (I was so hungry after having not much lunch.. oops).. the shells stuck to the white and made a real fine f'n mess of the eggs and it REALLY pi55ed me off to no end.. may be experiencing some carb withdrawals lol.. not that bad though.
BREKKY:
Oat bran galette topped with remaining vanilla fruche (I really like these!)
2x coffees
LUNCH:
Lg Skim Milk Latte
+ Late Lunch @4.30pm 1.5 hard boiled eggs mashed with no fat natural yogurt flavoured with curry and lemon pepper & a sprinkle of salt. I also wrapped some mash up in a slice of Turkey.
I found I was so hungry after been out for the day and not eating enough before leaving.. but having 1 1/2 eggs and 1 slice of turkey I was extremelly satisfied!
DINNER:
I'm bbqing (no oil) a nice piece of organic beef scotch fillet, topped with a sauce from a recipe in the book (not sure which one yet) think I might place an egg on top to fill me up too.
UPDATE: Had the scotch fillet topped with Hollandaise sauce.. yummo.. actually REALLY yummo. No egg on top though
DESSERT:
Made my own custard recipe up.. turned out sooooo good (little master chef you!!)
Custard made with 1/2 cup skim milk, 1 tub of vanilla Fruche, 2 egg yolks and a 1/2 tsp of cornflour

Day 1 - 24th July 2010
1:10pm
Weighed in: this morning @85kgs. Will take measurements tomorrow. I will make Sundays my official weigh in & measurement day.
Ok.. so I purchased The Dukan Diet book yesterday, and stocked up the kitchen with all the high protein necessary foods - fruche (fromage frais), yogurt, low-fat custard, poultry, eggs, lean ham & turkey slices.. and I need to get my hands on some oat bran - off to do a big fortnightly shop soon!
I'm aiming to stick to the 'Attack Phase' for 5-7 days.. hoping 5 will be enough. So far today I have consumed the following:
Brekky:
Large tumbler of water - 500ml
1 hard boiled egg mashed with curry
1 yoplait forme yogurt (cheesecake flavour)
Few slices of shaved 98% fat free ham
2x cups of coffee with skim milk
Feeling ok.. not hungry.. in good spirits.
Lunch:
Water.
Small bowl of Pauls 99% fat free custard
Lge Skim Capp from McDonald's (damn it! - Ate a spoonful of chocolate sprinkled froth, disposed of rest of froth.. note to self - ask for latte next time!)
1 Breast Piece of Woolies Roast Chicken
So.. I went and done the shopping (a 90min round trip in the car).. was tired by the end of it and realised the custard for lunch wasn't enough to satisfy prior to leaving home. So I brought a bbq chook from Woolies and had a piece of breast.. nice.. filled me in no time. Also chewed on some sugar free gum on the way home.. that Wrigley's Tropical 5 flavour.. good :)
Thinking of making chicken meatballs for dinner.. we'll see.
10.15pm - Update
Dinner:
More water. So the chicken meatballs didn't happen.. decided just to pick at the bbq chook instead and then cook up Dukan Oatbran Galette.. not bad.. quite nice actually. Oh... I had some more custard too.. and finished of the remaining fruche from making the galette.
Today I have become aware of how I shovel crap into my mouth without even been concious of it.. the capp froth & again tonight when making pasta for my daughter I managed to throw a few pieces in my mouth without a second thought!
Overall, today I found it quite easy.. not a struggle.. I think the fact that I can consume coffee gets me through it :) I have managed to drink approximately 2lts of water today.. that is nothing new for me though.. I've always loved to drink lots of water.
